Spindles for most newer hubs are thinner, as shown in the image below. Some hubs accept only thin spindles. Each model of these newer spindles has a different-colored painted mark, which may be on the rod, or on the chain. Check the color of the mark under sunlight, because the blue and purple colors can easily be confused under indoor lighting. The red arrow in the image indicates the length from the base of the threads to the mark. No matter where the mark is, the length which most affects compatibility is from the base of the threads to the shoulder, indicated by the green arrow.

In diesem Artikel werden Längen von Schaltketten für Sturmey-Archer Nabenschaltungen aufgelistet. Es besteht eine größere Austauschbarkeit als man zunächst annehmen würde. Obwohl eine kürzere Schaltkette schwieriger zu montieren und einzustellen ist, funktionieren sie solange die Kette bei vollständig entspanntem Zug nicht vollständig in der Nabe verschwindet. Eine längere Schaltkette funktioniert solange sie nicht vom Schaltzug seitwärts gebogen wird bei höchster Zugspannung. Die am Ende des Artikels folgende Tabelle listet verschiedene Schaltketten auf und weist ihnen Naben zu, für die sie ursprünglich gebaut wurden. Es gibt einen weiteren Artikel der beschreibt, wie man Sturmey-Archer Schaltkettenlängen bestimmt, indem man Nabenbauteile misst. Das kann nützlich sein, wenn man die Nabe nicht identifizieren kann oder sie nicht in der Liste findet. Hier finden sich einige Schaltkettenteilenummern einiger Naben aus den 1930ern und früher. Kapitel 1 des Sutherland's Handbook of Coaster Brakes and Internally-Geared Hubs (englisch) bei Sheldon Brown gibt noch einige Schaltkettenlängen für Naben nach 1992 Preis.

Diese Tabelle gibt Schaltkettenlängen für ältere und neuere S5/2 und AT5 Naben an.

If you are using a spindle which is not standard for the hub, you will have to adjust it by testing operation of the gears, rather than by aligning the mark. That is a good idea anyway. Generally, the cable should be just short of taut in the tightest position. Exception: the S5 with bellcrank: the cable should be taut.

Spezieller Dank geht an Bruce Dance für seine vielen Anregungen und Korrekturen.

Die folgende Tabelle ist nach Teilenummer und Achslänge sortierbar. Durch klicken auf die jeweilige Spaltenüberschrift lässt sich die Sortierreihenfolge ändern. Standardsortierung ist nach Teilenummern.

Zuerst werden Schaltketten mit dicken Zapfen gelistet (fett). Danach folgen die Schmalen (kursiv). Die dicken Achszapfen funktionieren nicht bei allen Naben. Wenn die Länge passt, funktionieren die dünnen Zapfen bei allen Naben.

Die Teileliste für die AB5 auf der Sturmey-Archer Heritage Website gibt als Teilenummer HSA490 für die Schaltkette an. Das ist ziemlich sicher falsch wie auch einige andere Teilenummern. Außer für die 90mm Trommelbremse und den Stahlkörper sind die gezeigten Bauteile in der Zeichnung identisch mit der X-RD5. Beide haben einen Kugelverschluss und die korrekte Schaltketten-Teilenummer lautet HSA317-
